Did any of us ever think EVE would blow up like this? Hit after hit, modeling, fashion line owner, magazine cover girl and now we find her droppin rhymes on Gwen Stefani's phenomenally successful album? On Rich Girl, EVE turns in a performance that just may be showing the first signs of her mailing it in. She starts it all off with a fake Jamaican flow that isn't wack but seems rehearsed and forced. When EVE does drop the attempted accent and go back to straight spittin' she sounds like the EVE that we've all come to know and love. The problem is that she's gone back to the same lyrical well so many times now that it seems to be running dry.
Rich Girl is a safe, infectious pop song that is destined to move units but falls far short of anything approaching artistic creativity. On an excellent album, this just turns out to be the runt of the liter. We know EVE can give us much more and in light of her success we've come to demand much more. Let's just write this one off as an anomaly.
