Dead Boyz Can't Fly. An original title, but unfortunately,
the album contains very little originality. The problem
isn't that A Sharp's album is bad, but it suffers from
uniformly falling in line with the dearth of other average
efforts out there from thousands of other artists vying
for a shot at the big time.
There are serviceable beats to be found, as on the
thick sounds of Word Iz and The Beauty Of
It All, which is unquestionably Dead Boyz Can't
Fly's standout track. This song represents the best
that A Sharp has to offer. It's on this song that the
rapper sounds confident, in control and fluid in delivery.
Unfortunately, there's not much else of interest. On
the remainder of the songs, A Sharp comes off as vocally
uncomfortable and strains throughout to match his syncopation
to his chosen beats. Even in the spots where he is able
to catch the groove, his subject matter seems to fall
flat. The impression is that of regurgitated rhymes
that have long ago lost their originality and punch.
Stepping Stonez and Funeral March are
good examples of the averageness that much of Dead Boyz
represents. The music is okay but fails to hold the
listener's attention. Add poor mixdowns to the plethora
of "five on a scale from zero to ten" beats
and you're left with solid mediocrity.
I can't help but come away from this album with the
impression that A Sharp is an older artist who refuses
to recognize that his rhyme prime had past him by. His
style screams of the stylings of a bygone era that aren't
very relevant and certainly don't transition well into
the sounds of the moment. I'm confident that this accounts
for the tentative, confidence lacking raps that A Sharp
lays down.
In the end, Dead Boyz Can't Fly misses the mark. This
isn't because it's bad; it's just not very interesting.
You could easily find worse, but you could also find
allot better.
