365 days, 40 something interviews later, "Vibin
with Deesha" turns the big, fat, exciting 1. While
to you that may not be a huge accomplishment; it is
to me. First let me point out that I wasn't born a writer,
and I'm pretty sure I won't die as one. This idea came
from a conversation with Snow (Thanks) at Eden Roc one
night. After he gave me the green light, I took off
with it, not having any idea what I was doing. People
often misconstrue the reason I began the column. So
let me break it down. The original point of the column
was to expose the phillyhiphop.com community to each
other. Meaning, the people I interview aren't supposed
to be the next hot thing out of Philly or Illadelph
legends. They are just people that use the site. That's
how it started. But, if you look over the roster of
the past interviewees, I obviously strayed from that
idea. Oops! My bad! I've heard the criticism that I
only feature no-names, backpackers...yadayadayada. Hush
already! I applaud and try to give shine to those that
are putting effort into living their dreams, and my
job isn't to crush the hopes of anyone. No matter how
wack. While "Vibin with Deesha" doesn't mean
a damn thing to someone at Def Jam, Vibe or even local
concert promoters, I'd like to believe it means something
to the individuals featured. I think people also confuse
me for someone that went to college for journalism and
should write a bit more professional. I'm just trying
to translate the interviewee's story into plain and
simple words. What's the point of being crafty with
what you're saying, if not a damn person can understand
it? Exactly!
Since beginning "Vibin", I've been blessed
to write for other sites, a music magazine, and for
a mainstream newspaper. Not too shabby for a woman that
went to school for nursing! I'm not here or have I ever
been here to steal anyone's title of head hip-hop writer.
Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. I'm just utilizing
and growing in something I like to do. I like to expose
those behind the culture. How they sound doesn't matter
to me as much as who they are. I've been accused of
dickriding also. Let me say this. I've never bigged
up someone's work that I personally didn't like. I'm
positive, but also truthful. I will give props to someone
that just made an album or did their first LaTazza show.
That's because it's an individual achievement that should
be praised. Plus, you won't see me on a mic never, ever,
ever (although Adam12 said he'd put me on a track)!
I make it a point to leave negativity to others.
I've put many of you through the vigorous tasks of
bearing Starbucks for an hour or two, taken you on a
tour of Cue Records to meet Ms.Tataz (I'll never forget
those 2 rules you gave me in the beginning), and have
forced you all to call your mom dukes for baby pics
(tell them to stop threatening me; I'm going to give
them back)!
Blah, Blah, Blah. What am I trying to say? Thank you
for supporting the column and me. Truly, I ventured
out on a limb. It's led to so many discoveries about
myself. In the course of this year, some of you have
turned into my psychiatrists (CCx, Side, Jase, Stef,
Med), and others I can't find if I tried (Scan, Dez,
Gritty - report to the DJ booth please). In the future
I hope to expand the subjects to other elements of the
culture and genders. Male emcees seem to dominate my
sh**! In writing about your past and future goals, I've
started to pursue mine.
Inspiration is much more valuable than money.
Here's to 52 more weeks!
