The Legacy Continues

This city has produced legends that have written the creative foundation for Hip Hop in the Illadelph region. As evolution continues to take place, we have no choice but to depend on a few to carry the legacy into a new era. That responsibility has unknowingly found a home at MC Baby Blak's front door. Blak became engrossed with Hip Hop around the influential age of 8. From sneaking into parties around his West Philadelphia neighborhood to experimenting with turntables at age 9, Blak discovered that hip-hop was in his future. Observing and digesting the crafts of pioneers such as Cash Money, Public Enemy and Eric B. & Rakim, Blak hooked up with his neighbor and childhood friend, Mr. Lish to form the infamous group Ill Advised. The chemistry and history between the two earned them a powerful reputation around the way. "The streets are your number one fan base. It grows from there." Among the many highlights for Ill Advised is the record Can You Smell It? Not only did this gain them local credibility, the album was also a smash hit in Japan. While continuing to thrive in Ill Advised, Blak put out Through the Eye, Against the Grain in 1996. He describes that album as a collection of gritty experiences with a positive message. From there it didn't stop. Either with Ill Advised or on the solo tip, Blak has been blessed to be able to put out a record a year since 1996. For that reason and pure determination, he has traveled from Canada to Japan, and many countries in between. Not like I would know, but I've heard that touring overseas will give you a distinct feeling, "They are into your music and actually appreciate it, even if they don't understand what you’re saying." He recounts his travels on Jazzy Jeff's The Magnificent, which was released in 2002. That's only one of a few appearances Blak makes on that album. He can also be heard with Pauly Yamz on the feel good hip-hop anthem of 2002, For the Love of the Game. Recently, Blak inked a deal with BBE Records, which also released DJ Spinna and Jazzy Jeff's latest releases. "The grinding is starting to pay off." While concentrating on his promising path, he also devotes his time to Cinema 7 productions and Newtron Entertainment, which partners him up with long time manager and friend, Newt. With his solo album, the new Ill Advised release, an upcoming mixtape, and a street compilation, one thing is guaranteed: the best is yet to come.

Breathe Easy

Now that I've given you a VERY general overlay of what Baby Blak has done, and a few of the places he's been, you may still wonder about the person behind these accomplishments. His lyrics reveal a lot about him. They reflect his attitude, mood swings and situations. "My songs are issues that people can really relate to." They are based on life. It's that simple! He will be one of the first to stand up for our city of brotherly love, but admits that hate inspires him, "Because of self-frustration, people try to stop me and can't. I love it." They'll never admit it, but it's no secret that many feel intimidated by Blak. I have yet to figure out why. He'll point any MC in the right direction, and give them advice. His fan base has grown to include many artists that share and identify with his passion for hip-hop. "When people love your music, it makes you feel good." I have to say Blak has this unique positive attitude that is hard to find in any music genre, especially hip-hop. Example one is his loyalty. "I've had the same crew and manager for years." Matter of fact, the street compilation that is on deck is comprised of the talent from Blak's block. He stays true to his roots, because he knows that out of that, everything has grown. Example two is his take on competition. "I'm not disappointed with anyone, because they do what they do for their own reasons." I'm sure Blak has his personal opinions, but he never let that show during our interview. "I can think your music is bulls***, but if your hustle and drive is professional, I'm going to support you." Wasting energy on unnecessary hate is just not in this man's blood. He has other things on his agenda. Imagine that...

Respect

No doubt, Blak is humble and laid back. Nothing goes to his head. He has no time for ignorance with anyone, including the industry. "It's like a fraternity. You have to give up something for initiation, and talent isn't enough." He makes sure to align himself with the proper people so his creativity isn't sacrificed. Staying independent is important to Blak. Throwing him cars and videos won't get you anywhere. He wants money to take care of himself and his family. "When you have a brain, you are seen as a threat, so many labels stay away." Having the deadly combination of delivery, wordplay, a sense of realism, and most important a connection with the joys and struggles of his audience, he’s destined to succeed. He's the first to admit, he's always been a s**t talking, battle rapper, but contrary to popular belief, he gives as much as he receives. From the time he gets up until the time he goes to bed, he consumed with making quality music. "I've learned though mistakes not to burn bridges or take things personal, and how to be a business man." 2002 was nothing compared to what is coming in 2003. Blak said it best, "If I can't go through you, I'll go over you." I guess what they say is true; once you go black...well, you know the rest.
