An amendment was quietly passed this week in the state
House Appropriations Committee giving the Philadelphia
Parking Authority the go ahead to begin installing spy
cameras around the city.
Its not like Big Brother hasn't been on our asses our
entire lives but the latest move is a bold, out in the
open attack that further infringes on our privacy rights.
The Philadelphia Parking Authority is set to install
so called red light cameras at intersections around
the city. These cameras will supposedly snap pictures
of vehicles that run red lights to cut down on traffic
accidents. Part of the problem is that the cameras ONLY
capture the license plate of the vehicle, leaving it
up to the owner of the vehicle to prove that they were
not the one behind the wheel if that is the case. The
state also hasn't addressed how it will deal with the
possibility that the spy cameras malfunction, etc.
Of course this is all about money. The implementation
of the program will add numerous positions to the parking
authority. Additionally, as reported in the Philadelphia
Daily News, if the cameras register 10 violations a
day a $100 each, that adds up to $3 million additional
dollars that goes right back to the state.
Let's not forget that the state snatched control of
the PPA away from the city in June of last year, led
by state rep John Perzel in a Republican power move.
Peep that Philly is a Democratic city and the state
is Republican led. You do the math. Somehow I believe
this is all part of their master plan...
Most of us have felt the wrath of the nasty, overweight,
trying to catch their breath, Jerri curl wearing, woke
up on the wrong side of the earth meter maids at one
time or another. I know it's a bad stereotype but in
this city it proves to be true. These people are already
so hated that local group Twin Atlas released a song
called The Philadelphia Parking Authority Must Die a
few years ago.
